The healthcare industry is the largest industry in United States and it provides a significant amount of professional opportunities for those working in the field. If you are looking to pursue a career in healthcare, getting a bachelor’s degree in health science could be a good option. While there are plenty of career opportunities for those with a health science background, there are several factors to consider before deciding if it is the right track for you.
Interest in Natural Sciences
The first factor that you should consider when deciding if you should pursue a degree in health science is whether or not you have an interest in the natural sciences. Much of your coursework while you are in school will revolve around the natural sciences, which includes biology and kinesiology. If you have taken and enjoyed courses in these areas then going into health science could be a good choice. If you haven’t taken any courses in these fields, then it would be a good idea to sign up for some classes in the natural sciences.
Academic Strengths
Beyond having an interest in the field, you should also consider whether your academic strengths match up well with the health science education path. Health science can be a very challenging academic path. Those that want to be successful will need to have a certain level of natural acumen in math and science. If you tend to struggle in these areas then it may be tough to be successful in your health science classes.
Career Opportunities
The third factor that needs to be considered before you decide to pursue a degree in health science is whether there are career opportunities that you would be interested in. There are many different career options to choose from. Those that have a bachelor’s degree can ultimately pursue a career in nursing, biomedical engineering, hospital administration, or health and fitness counseling. As the health science major is broad, there are many opportunities that you could ultimately pursue.

Ability and Desire to Pursue Higher Education
The fourth factor that should be considered is whether you will want to continue your education after you have received your bachelor’s degree. Clearly, there are plenty of jobs and specific career paths that you could pursue. However, many of the top jobs in health science require a higher level of education to advance in your career. The ultimate level of education needed will vary based on the career path that you pursue. For example, those that want to go into nursing will need to complete an additional nursing school program. Those that want to go into biomedical engineering will need a master’s degree to advance professionally.
